The 2012 murals by Ernest Zacharevic, painted for the George Town Festival, made the old town's walls famous. 'Children on a Bicycle' on Lebuh Armenian and 'Boy on a Bike' on Lebuh Ah Quee were repainted by the artist himself in 2024, with the state's backing.
- Go before 9am: the light is soft and the lanes are quiet.
- The murals sit a few minutes' walk from Masjid Kapitan Keling and the clan jetties.

- Closed on Fridays: plan it for another day.
- Fully indoors, so it works in the October-November rains.

How the SIM score works
Each place scores out of 10 on four things you can check yourself. Price (3 points): free scores 3, up to RM30 for a non-Malaysian adult 2, up to RM60 1, more or unpublished 0. Public transport (3): on the free CAT loop 3, a Rapid Penang route stopping at the gate 2, a bus plus a transfer 1, no published route 0. Published opening hours (2). Status (2): inside the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, a national park, or named in the UNESCO Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve; 1 for an attraction listed by the reserve without protected status.
Prices, hours and bus routes were read on the operators' own sites, PERHILITAN, the Penang State Museum Board and Rapid Penang in October 2026. Food stalls appear only with a JAKIM halal certificate we could check, so none is ranked here.
Nobody paid to be on this list.
The best things to do in Penang are free or cheap and close together: George Town’s murals, its mosque and its clan jetties all sit inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a free bus loop. For nature, take the funicular up Penang Hill (RM40 return for a standard adult ticket) or bus 101 to the national park at Teluk Bahang. Our ranking scores ten places on price, public transport, published hours and protected status, all checked in October 2026.
How the score works
Each place is scored out of 10 on four things a visitor can check before going:
- Published entry price (3 points). Free scores 3; up to RM30 for a non-Malaysian adult, 2; up to RM60, 1; more, or no price published, 0.
- Public transport (3 points). On the free CAT bus loop in George Town, 3; a Rapid Penang route that stops at the gate, 2; a bus plus a transfer, 1; no published route, 0.
- Published opening hours (2 points). Hours stated by the operator. A public street counts as always open.
- Status (2 points). Inside the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, a national park, or named in the UNESCO Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve.
The free CAT bus runs a loop between Weld Quay and Komtar from 6am to 11.45pm, every 10 to 15 minutes (Rapid Penang, read Oct 2026). The service is still free (The Star, 20 Nov 2025).
Two different UNESCO labels apply on the island. George Town, with Melaka, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008; its core zone covers 109 hectares (George Town World Heritage Inc.). Penang Hill and its surroundings became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on 16 September 2021, covering the hill’s forests, the Botanic Gardens, Penang National Park and the coast between them (Tourism Malaysia).
We list food only where a JAKIM halal certificate can be checked in the official directory, myehalal; no stall is ranked here.
Penang in one day
A day in George Town works on foot and on the free CAT bus. Avoid Friday if the museum matters to you: it is closed that day (Penang State Museum Board).
- 8am, the murals. Start on Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Ah Quee before the crowds. The best-known murals, painted by Ernest Zacharevic in 2012, were repainted by the artist in 2024 (The Star, 25 Sep 2024).
- 10am, Masjid Kapitan Keling. A few minutes’ walk away. Visit outside prayer times, with arms and legs covered.
- 11am, Penang State Museum. Two hours indoors on Farquhar Street, open 9am to 5pm.
- Lunch. Choose a restaurant showing a valid JAKIM certificate.
- 3pm, Fort Cornwallis and the esplanade. The fort reopened in July 2026 after a decade of conservation (The Star, 14 Aug 2026).
- 5pm, the clan jetties. Walk out over the water at Weld Quay as the light drops. People live here, so keep it quiet.
- Evening, Penang Hill. Bus 204 from Weld Quay to the lower station; the funicular runs until 11pm, with the last trip up at 10pm (Penang Hill Corporation). The city lights from the top end the day well.
Penang in a weekend
Day one is the George Town day above.
Day two, the north-west. Take bus 101 from Weld Quay early. It runs every 10 to 12 minutes from 5.30am and ends at Teluk Bahang (Rapid Penang).
- 8am, Penang National Park. Register and pay the conservation fee at the entrance. The trail to Kerachut beach takes about two hours, to Teluk Kampi about three. The park opens 8am to 4.30pm and closes from 1pm to 2pm (PERHILITAN). Kerachut also has a turtle conservation centre and a lake where sea water and fresh water sit in two separate layers.
- 1.30pm, Tropical Spice Garden. On the same road back towards George Town, with buses 101 and 102 stopping in front (Tropical Spice Garden). Entry includes an audio guide in 21 languages.
- Alternative for day two: Penang Hill by day plus The Habitat’s rainforest trail at the summit, then the Botanic Gardens below by e-hailing car.
If you have a third day, do Penang Hill and The Habitat in the morning and finish at the Botanic Gardens, which stay open until 7pm.
How to get to Penang from Kuala Lumpur
By train and ferry. KTMB’s ETS trains run on the electrified West Coast Line from KL Sentral to Butterworth, on the mainland opposite George Town (KTMB). Check KTMB’s timetable for current departures; the trip takes about four hours on 2026 timetables, according to the schedule compiled by train36. At Butterworth, walk to the Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal. Ferries cross to the Raja Tun Uda terminal in George Town every 20 to 30 minutes from 5.20am to 10pm, then hourly until 1am (Penang Hill Corporation, directions). The fare has been RM2 for an adult and RM1 for a child since September 2023 (Utusan Malaysia). The ferry lands next to Weld Quay, where the CAT loop and bus 101 start.
By air. Penang International Airport is 16 km south of George Town (Penang Hill Corporation). From the airport, Rapid Penang bus 102 runs to Teluk Bahang via the north coast, and bus 306 runs to the Penang General Hospital on the edge of George Town (Rapid Penang).
By road. Drive north on the North-South Expressway and cross either the Penang Bridge or the Second Penang Bridge (Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah) from Bandar Cassia. Both bridge tolls are charged one way only, towards the island. A private car pays RM5.74 on the Penang Bridge (RinggitPlus, Sep 2026). Parking in George Town’s heritage core is scarce: leave the car at the hotel and use the CAT.
Best time to go
Penang can be visited all year, but the hill and the national park are best on dry days. In the north-west of the Peninsula, MetMalaysia records two dry periods, January to February and June to July, and two wet ones, October to November (the wettest) and April to May (MetMalaysia). The month strips on the cards above show those driest months for the outdoor places.
In the wet season, plan the outdoor visits for the morning and keep the museum for the afternoon. The national park closes from 1pm to 2pm every day, and its trails are hot by noon whatever the month.
Budget: what the main tickets cost
Prices for a non-Malaysian adult, read on the operators’ sites in October 2026. Malaysians and residents with MyKad, MM2H or i-Kad pay less on Penang Hill and in the national park.

A full George Town day costs about RM25 in tickets, plus the funicular if you go up the hill in the evening. A nature day with the national park and the Spice Garden costs RM80 in tickets plus a few ringgit of bus fares; the Spice Garden quotes RM3.40 one way on buses 101 and 102 from Komtar (visitor’s guide).
Residents should know the Penang Hill sunrise rate: RM6 return for anyone who works, studies or lives in Malaysia with valid ID, bought at the lower station between 6.15am and 8am. It is not offered on public holidays, school holidays or peak periods (Penang Hill Corporation).
FAQ
What is Penang best known for? George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, with its shophouses, murals and multicultural streets, and Penang Hill, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2021. The island’s food is famous too; Muslim visitors should check for a JAKIM halal certificate.
How much does Penang Hill cost? A return funicular ticket costs RM40 for a standard adult and RM16 for MyKad, MM2H and i-Kad holders. The Express Lane costs RM80 standard. The funicular runs from 6.30am to 11pm, with the last trip up at 10pm (Penang Hill Corporation, Oct 2026).
Is Penang National Park free? No longer. Non-citizen adults pay a RM50 conservation fee and Malaysian adults RM10; residents of Teluk Bahang and Kuala Sungai Pinang pay RM2. The canopy walkway costs the same again (PERHILITAN).
Where is the George Town street art? Mostly around Lebuh Armenian, Lebuh Ah Quee, Lebuh Cannon and the lanes between them, inside the heritage core. It is free and on the CAT bus loop. Go early in the morning for empty streets.
Is one day enough for Penang? One day covers George Town and an evening on Penang Hill. Add a second day for the national park and the Spice Garden at Teluk Bahang, about an hour from George Town by bus 101.
How do I get from KL to Penang without flying? Take the KTMB ETS from KL Sentral to Butterworth, then walk to the ferry terminal and cross to George Town for RM2. By car, take the North-South Expressway and either Penang bridge.
