How the SIM score works

Entry condition, not a criterion: every restaurant on this list appears by name as a certified food premise in the official Malaysian halal directory run by JAKIM (halal.gov.my), with a certificate valid on 31 October 2026. For hotel restaurants, the restaurant's own kitchen must be listed; a hotel whose banquet kitchen alone is certified does not qualify. 'Pork-free', 'Muslim-owned' or 'halal ingredients' without a certificate does not qualify, and neither does a restaurant known to serve alcohol: Lemon Garden at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, although its kitchen is certified, was left out because the hotel advertised a buffet price 'inclusive of alcohol package' there in May 2026.

Scores out of 10. Rail access (4 points): straight-line distance from the restaurant to the nearest operating LRT, MRT, monorail or KTM Komuter station, measured on OpenStreetMap: 4 up to 500 m, 3 up to 1 km, 2 up to 2 km, 1 up to 3 km. Certificate validity (3 points): 3 if the certificate runs to April 2028 or later, 2 if it runs past October 2027, 1 otherwise. Published prices (3 points): 3 for current prices published by the operator, 1 for dated 2025-2026 prices reported by the press or in promotions, 0 if we found none.

We also searched the directory for the Kuala Lumpur restaurants of the MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2026, including Dewakan, Akar, Qureshi, Jwala, Yun House, Li Yen, Sao Nam, Leen's, Gulainya and De.Wan 1958: none appeared under its own name, so no Michelin distinction is scored. Nobody paid to be on this list.

Opening hours, prices and ferry schedules change: check with the operator before you travel. Nobody paid to be on this list.

The certified choice for halal fine dining in central Kuala Lumpur is THIRTY8, on the 38th floor of the Grand Hyatt near KLCC. Its own kitchen is listed in JAKIM’s halal directory until April 2028, it is a few minutes’ walk from the monorail, and the hotel publishes its set prices. Seven more upscale restaurants pass the same test: Vasco’s at the Hilton, The Great Chase, Midtown Brasserie, Rebung Chef Ismail, Positano Risto, Wagyu Dojo and Serena Brasserie.

Many lists of “halal restaurants in KL” mix certified kitchens with places that are only pork-free or Muslim-owned. This one keeps only restaurants that appear under their own name in the official Malaysian halal directory, with a certificate valid on 31 October 2026. We checked every name one by one in October 2026 and give each certificate’s expiry date on its card.

Is there Michelin-starred halal food in Kuala Lumpur?

Not under a halal certificate, as far as the directory shows. The MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2026, published on 11 November 2025, lists 77 places in Kuala Lumpur: Dewakan with two stars, six restaurants with one star (Akar, Beta, Chim by Chef Noom, DC by Darren Chin, Molina and Terra Dining), 25 Bib Gourmand addresses and 45 Selected restaurants.

We searched the halal directory for the names that halal diners ask about most often, including Dewakan, Akar, Qureshi, Jwala, Yun House, Li Yen, Sao Nam, Leen’s, Gulainya and De.Wan 1958. None appeared as a certified premise under its own name in October 2026. Some of these restaurants describe themselves as pork-free or use halal-certified ingredients, and some serve alcohol. That is not the same as a certificate, so they are not on this list.

The 2027 edition of the guide has not been published yet. When it is, we will check the new names against the directory again.

How to check a halal certificate yourself

A certificate on the wall can be out of date, and a “halal” sign without a certificate number is not one. JAKIM has said that promoting food as halal without the Malaysia Halal Certificate is an offence (The Sun). The check takes two minutes:

  1. Open the halal directory on halal.gov.my (the “Halal Status Verification” page, also reached from myehalal.halal.gov.my).
  2. Choose the category Premis Makanan (food premises) and type part of the restaurant’s name. Short words work best: “THIRTY8”, not “Thirty8 at Grand Hyatt”.
  3. Read the result: the premise name, the company that holds the certificate, the address and the expiry date. Click a line to see the certified menu and the JAKIM reference number.
  4. For a hotel, look for the restaurant’s own kitchen. Hotels often certify their banquet, pastry and butchery kitchens first. A certified ballroom does not make the hotel’s Chinese or Japanese restaurant halal.
  5. If the restaurant does not appear, ask staff for the certificate number and search again with the company name printed on it.

Certificates for food premises last two years under JAKIM’s certification manual (JAKIM, circular 1/2026, pp. 80-81). Several restaurants on this list renew between 2027 and 2028, so check again before a booking far ahead. For the rules behind the logo, see our guide to Malaysian halal certification.

Getting there from KL Sentral and the city centre

Five of the eight restaurants are within a kilometre of a rail station. The distances on the cards are straight-line distances measured on OpenStreetMap; the walk is usually a little longer.

  • City centre and KLCC. THIRTY8 (Grand Hyatt) is 357 m from Raja Chulan monorail and 641 m from KLCC LRT. Serena Brasserie (InterContinental) is 142 m from Ampang Park LRT and 290 m from Persiaran KLCC MRT.
  • KL Sentral. Vasco’s at the Hilton is 129 m from KL Sentral, where the LRT, MRT, monorail, KTM Komuter and the airport train meet. It is the easiest certified table to reach straight from KLIA.
  • Lake Gardens. Rebung Chef Ismail sits on level 5 of the Bukit Aman car park on Jalan Tanglin, about 715 m from Masjid Jamek LRT, uphill. Most diners come by car or e-hailing.
  • Dutamas and Segambut. Midtown Brasserie (Hyatt Regency at KL Midtown) is 798 m from Segambut KTM Komuter. The Great Chase and Positano Risto, both at Publika, are 1.7 km from the same station; e-hailing is simpler.
  • Jalan Klang Lama. Wagyu Dojo is 1.1 km from Petaling KTM Komuter. Plan on a car.

Best time to go: Ramadan buffets and the rest of the year

There is no season for restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, but there is a calendar. During Ramadan, the hotel restaurants on this list switch to iftar buffets with fixed sitting times around sunset, and prices rise. In 2026, Vasco’s ran its Ramadan buffet from 19 February to 19 March, daily from 6.30 pm, at RM238 nett per adult (Glitz, Hilton Kuala Lumpur Ramadan 2026). Iftar buffets book out early, especially at weekends.

Outside Ramadan, hotel restaurants also run themed buffets at set prices, as Midtown Brasserie did in early 2026. Ask for the regular menu if you want the standard price.

Budget: what a halal fine-dining meal costs in KL

Few restaurants on the list publish a full price list online. These are the prices we could verify, with their dates. Prices marked “+” are before tax and service charge; “nett” prices include them.

Restaurant Price found Date and source
THIRTY8 (Grand Hyatt) Sharing menu from RM628 nett for two; afternoon tea RM298 nett per person (minimum four) Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, read Oct 2026
Vasco’s (Hilton) Ramadan buffet RM238 nett per adult, RM119 per child Feb-Mar 2026, Glitz
Midtown Brasserie (Hyatt Regency) Themed buffet RM178+ to RM198+ per person Early 2026, Malay Mail
The Great Chase Beef Wellington RM170; Sunday roasts RM58 (chicken) to RM130 (lamb) Opening, Sep 2025, SethLui
Rebung Chef Ismail Ramadan buffet RM118 nett per adult 2024, CompareHero

As a rough guide from these figures, plan on RM180 to RM320 per person for a hotel buffet or set menu, and more for wagyu or a multi-course sharing menu. Ask the restaurant for the current price when you book: promotional prices change every few weeks.

Dress code and practical points

None of the eight restaurants publishes a strict dress code. In hotel restaurants, smart casual is the norm: long trousers or a skirt, covered shoulders and closed shoes are always safe. Hotels and malls in Kuala Lumpur run their air conditioning cold, so bring a light layer.

  • Prayer. Hotels and malls in Kuala Lumpur usually have a surau (prayer room); ask the restaurant or the concierge where the nearest one is.
  • Booking. THIRTY8 takes bookings through the hotel’s TableCheck page. For the others, call or use the booking page on the hotel or restaurant website.
  • Groups and events. Several hotels on this list also certify their banquet kitchens (Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency KL Midtown, InterContinental, DoubleTree by Hilton): useful for a wedding, a corporate dinner or an aqiqah, but check the banquet kitchen’s own line in the directory.

FAQ

Is there a halal fine-dining restaurant in Kuala Lumpur? Yes. THIRTY8 at the Grand Hyatt, Vasco’s at the Hilton, The Great Chase, Midtown Brasserie at the Hyatt Regency KL Midtown, Rebung Chef Ismail, Positano Risto, Wagyu Dojo and Serena Brasserie at the InterContinental all held a valid JAKIM-listed halal certificate in October 2026. Each card above gives the expiry date.

Are there Michelin-starred halal restaurants in KL? Not with a halal certificate, as far as the official directory showed in October 2026. None of the starred or Bib Gourmand restaurants we searched for in the 2026 guide appeared under its own name.

What is the best halal restaurant in KL? On our scoring, THIRTY8 at the Grand Hyatt: its own kitchen is certified to April 2028, it is 357 m from Raja Chulan monorail, and the hotel publishes its prices. The score measures what you can check, not taste.

Is a pork-free restaurant halal? No. “Pork-free” means only that no pork is served. A halal certificate also covers the source and slaughter of meat, the other ingredients, alcohol, and how the kitchen is run. Check the directory, as explained above.

Can a hotel restaurant be halal if the hotel has a bar? Yes, if the restaurant’s own kitchen holds the certificate. The certificate covers the listed premise, not the whole hotel, so check that the restaurant you are booking is the one listed.

How much does halal fine dining cost in Kuala Lumpur? From the prices published in 2025 and 2026, about RM180 to RM320 per person for a hotel buffet or set menu. A sharing menu at THIRTY8 starts at RM628 nett for two.
