Malaysia's best-known corporate art gallery, founded in August 1992 at Dayabumi, has moved from Suria KLCC into the curved new Ombak KLCC building. It opened in stages from 21 August 2026 with a free ground-floor preview called The First Glimpse, which mixes a short history of the gallery, a digital art experience and a first exhibition drawn from the PETRONAS collection and the AFK Collection. The Edge reports that the full gallery, around 126,000 sq ft, is planned for the fourth quarter of 2027, so what you see today is the opening chapter.

  • Free, daily, and a few steps from the MRT: the easiest culture stop on this list.
  • Public programmes such as workshops need registration because places are limited (The Star, 11 Sep 2026).

KLCC Property Holdings' sweeping new building closes the last open plot of the KLCC precinct, next to the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park. Behind the wave-shaped roof are about 120 retail spaces, the new home of Galeri PETRONAS and a rooftop garden with open lawns and direct views of the Twin Towers. It is the most talked-about opening of the year in the city centre because it joins the mall directly to the MRT and to the older KLCC complex by covered walkways.

  • The rooftop garden is reached by lift or escalator from inside the mall and has 3,500 sq m of lawns and seating (operator).
  • Press reports a Pokemon Center and a Nintendo pop-up store among the tenants (The Star, SAYS, 2026).

The 1897 landmark with the clock tower, a National Heritage site, reopened in February 2026 after 11 months of conservation under Khazanah's Warisan KL programme. The 2025 works rebuilt the three copper domes, reopened the rear colonnade that a substation had blocked for decades and exposed the vaulted ceilings. You can walk the grounds for free, visit the Royal Selangor pewter gallery for free and take the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, whose halls trace the city from the 1820s to today. This guide does not rate the food outlets in the complex.

  • Block 2, the Old General Post Office, opened on 23 May 2026 and is the third building finished under Warisan KL (Khazanah).

Billed as Asia's first and largest integrated durian experience centre, KLDEX sits beside the Malaysia Tourism Centre on Jalan Ampang and opened on 4 July 2026 with the support of the tourism ministry. A durian culture museum, with a replica plantation and archives of early European and Chinese accounts of the fruit, sits alongside an immersive theatre that stages four performances a day and a guided tasting that must be pre-registered. The Star describes it as designed for families. It is the one opening on this list that is purely about Malaysian food heritage rather than shopping.

  • The theatre stages an original production about two rival durian traders, with four shows a day (The Star).
  • Guided tastings need pre-registration (The Star).

BookXcess calls it the largest 24-hour bookstore in Southeast Asia, and The Star reports that about 2,000 people came to the midnight launch on 10 December 2025. It has four zones (fiction, non-fiction, children and non-books), nearly a kilometre of walkways, suspended book installations and long desks with plug points for studying or remote work. Because it never closes, it is the one place on this list you can use at any hour.

The family recreation park inside Bukit Kiara Federal Park, known to residents as TTDI Park, reopened in June 2026 after a RM6.5 million upgrade. Most of the money went underground, to electrical cabling, 233 new lamp posts and the rehabilitation of ponds and drainage, with about RM700,000 on landscaping, walkways and two gazebos. A park-user letter in The Star complained that only 11 percent of the budget went on visible facilities, so expect a reopened park rather than a new attraction.

How the SIM score works

Ten places that opened, or reopened after a major restoration, in Kuala Lumpur and Greater KL between October 2025 and October 2026, each scored out of 10 on five things you can check yourself. Freshness (2 points): 2 if the opening date is on or after 1 August 2026, 1 if between 1 February and 31 July 2026, 0 if earlier. Rail (3 points): the walking distance from the nearest LRT, MRT, monorail or BRT station, measured on OpenStreetMap with the FOSSGIS foot router in October 2026; 3 points up to 400 m, 2 up to 700 m, 1 up to 1,000 m, 0 beyond. Cost (2 points): 2 if there is no entry ticket, 1 if a ticket of RM50 or less is published, 0 if more or unpublished. Hours (1 point): published hours cover every day and at least nine hours. Rain (2 points): 2 if the main attractions are indoors, 1 if the visit is partly outdoors, 0 if outdoors.

The score measures how easy, cheap and weather-proof a new place is to visit, not how good it is, so a free gallery next to an MRT station beats a beautiful house on a hill. Only places already open to the public on 31 October 2026 are included. Hotels, restaurants and anything not yet open are left out, and the places already covered in our other KL guides are not repeated. Food outlets are not rated: where we mention them, we say whether the operator publishes halal information.

Opening dates, prices and hours were read on operator and press pages in October 2026, and each is dated in the sources. Nobody paid to be on this list.

Opening hours, prices and ferry schedules change: check with the operator before you travel. Nobody paid to be on this list.

The openings that matter most in Kuala Lumpur this year are Ombak KLCC and the new Galeri PETRONAS beside the Twin Towers, the restored Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Seri Negara heritage houses, and the KLDEX durian museum on Jalan Ampang. Four of our ten places can be reached on foot from a station in under 400 metres, and eight have no entry ticket at all. The ranking above scores all ten on five facts a visitor can check, and the text below turns them into a one-day plan, a transport guide and a short budget.

What counts as “new” here

We kept only places that were open to the public on 31 October 2026 and had opened, or reopened after a major restoration, since October 2025. That window gives ten places in three groups.

  • Culture and heritage: Galeri PETRONAS, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Seri Negara, KLDEX and The Library by BookXcess.
  • Malls with a draw of their own: Ombak KLCC, Hextar World at Empire City, KLGCC Mall and Coalfields Retail Park.
  • Green space: Lembah Kiara Park, reopened in June 2026.

Hotels, restaurants and the places already covered in our other Kuala Lumpur guides are not repeated. Several much-discussed projects are not on the list because they had not opened to the public when we checked: the 118 Mall at Merdeka 118 (Wikipedia gives 1 November 2026 as its date, after earlier slips), the Muara Arts Gallery in Medan Pasar (announced for 1 November) and the Korean Cultural Centre, which The Star reported would admit the public from 2 November. The observation deck of Merdeka 118 is a separate question, covered in the questions at the end.

Why these ten are being talked about

Numbers published by the operators and the press explain the attention.

  • Ombak KLCC completes the KLCC precinct. It has about 420,000 sq ft of net lettable area and more than 120 retail spaces, and its 3,500 sq m rooftop garden looks straight at the Twin Towers (Ombak KLCC, The Edge).
  • Galeri PETRONAS began in August 1992 at Dayabumi and has now moved into a building where it will eventually occupy about 126,000 sq ft. The full opening is planned for the fourth quarter of 2027, so today’s free preview, The First Glimpse, is the first chapter.
  • Seri Negara and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building are two of the eight heritage buildings Khazanah is restoring under Warisan KL, a programme The Star puts at RM600 million. Khazanah finished the Sultan Abdul Samad works in 11 months and opened its Block 1 on 2 February 2026; the old General Post Office next door followed on 23 May 2026.
  • KLDEX is billed as Asia’s first and largest integrated durian experience centre, with 1,900 sq m of space. It opened on 4 July 2026 with the support of the tourism ministry.
  • The Library by BookXcess drew about 2,000 people to its midnight launch on 10 December 2025 and describes itself as the largest 24-hour bookstore in Southeast Asia, at 3,530 sq m.
  • Coalfields Retail Park reported more than 390,000 visitors in its opening week and says it is aiming for five million a year.
  • Hextar World has 1.8 million sq ft of net lettable area, 450,000 sq ft of it for entertainment, including an ice skating stadium and an indoor ski slope.
  • KLGCC Mall brought Malaysia’s first HarborLand, the Thai indoor playground brand’s first branch outside Thailand, with 44 attractions in about 25,000 sq ft.
  • Lembah Kiara Park is the quiet one: a RM6.5 million upgrade, of which only about RM700,000 went on visible landscaping, according to the Malay Mail.

Reading the ranking

The two top scores, Galeri PETRONAS (10) and Ombak KLCC (9), share one address 154 metres from Persiaran KLCC MRT station. They win because they are fresh, free, indoors for the most part and open all week. That does not make them the deepest experiences. Seri Negara scores 3 because it sits on a hill 2.6 km on foot from the nearest station, charges RM40 to RM50 to a foreign adult and closes on Mondays, yet it is the building with the most history. Read the score as a measure of how easy a visit is, and use the summaries to decide what is worth the effort.

A few things the ranking does not show:

  • Phased openings: Galeri PETRONAS and Coalfields are still being completed, so tenants and programmes will change.
  • Prices change: we give the figure the operator published in October 2026, and dated sources are listed under each place.
  • Food: we do not rate restaurants. KLDEX and the other complexes have food outlets whose halal status the operators do not publish on the pages we read, so check the official JAKIM directory (myehalal) before you eat.

A one-day itinerary through the city centre

Four of the places sit in the central corridor, and the order below follows the opening hours.

  1. 10am, Ombak KLCC and Galeri PETRONAS. Take the MRT Putrajaya line to Persiaran KLCC, walk into the mall and visit the free gallery, which opens at 10am. Then take the lift to the rooftop garden for the view of the towers. Allow a relaxed hour and a half.
  2. Late morning, KLDEX. The durian centre is 260 m from Bukit Nanas monorail station and 1.7 km on foot from Persiaran KLCC, so a short e-hailing ride or a walk through the Ampang area both work. Tickets start at RM31, and the theatre stages four performances a day. The Star and the operator give different closing times, so confirm when you buy.
  3. Midday break. Choose a JAKIM-certified outlet for lunch and leave room for prayer; on a Friday, remember the midday congregation.
  4. Mid-afternoon, Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Take the Kelana Jaya LRT line from KLCC station to Masjid Jamek (three stops), then walk 391 m. The galleries run 9am to 6pm and the grounds 8am to 10pm. Entry to the grounds and the Royal Selangor pewter gallery is free, and the City Gallery is ticketed for non-Malaysians. If you have time, the old General Post Office in the same complex opened in May.

A second day can be built around Seri Negara in the Lake Gardens, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm, with a guided slot if you want the curator-led route. Pair it with the Muzium Negara MRT side of town, which is already covered in our other guides. For a family day with a car, combine KLGCC Mall and Lembah Kiara Park, both in Bukit Kiara, with the park first thing in the morning (it opens at 5.30am) and HarborLand once the mall is open.

How to get there

Transport is the biggest divide among the ten. We measured walking distances on OpenStreetMap in October 2026.

  • By rail, under 400 m: Galeri PETRONAS and Ombak KLCC (154 m, Persiaran KLCC MRT), KLDEX (260 m, Bukit Nanas monorail) and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building (391 m, Masjid Jamek).
  • By rail or BRT, with a longer walk: The Library by BookXcess is 681 m from SunMed BRT station on the BRT Sunway line. Lembah Kiara Park is 1.7 km from Taman Tun Dr Ismail MRT station.
  • Shuttles: KLGCC Mall runs a RM2 shuttle from Semantan MRT Entrance A, 8am to 11pm with two breaks. Hextar World has a Rapid KL bus marked HWEC from MRT Bandar Utama, which we know only from photographs taken on 3 October 2026, so check the current timetable with Rapid KL.
  • By road: Coalfields Retail Park lists access via the NSE, GCE, LATAR, DASH and WCE expressways and highways. We found no walkable rail link, and the nearest station, Sungai Buloh, is about 12 km away in a straight line.
  • Seri Negara: the house stands on the hill above the Lake Gardens, so most visitors arrive by e-hailing from the Muzium Negara MRT area.

Ombak KLCC also runs a free buggy through KLCC Park every 30 minutes, from 10am to 10pm, according to TheSmartLocal.

Budget: what the operators publish

Prices below are for a non-Malaysian adult, as published in October 2026.

Place Published price Source

Sultan Abdul Samad Building Grounds and Royal Selangor Gallery free; City Gallery ticketed Operator

A city-centre day with Galeri PETRONAS, Ombak KLCC, KLDEX and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building costs RM31 in entry fees, plus the City Gallery ticket if you choose it and your transport. A Seri Negara visit adds RM40 for a self-guided ticket. Malaysians pay less at Seri Negara (RM8 self-guided, RM12 guided for an adult) and enter the City Gallery free.

When to go

None of these openings has a seasonal calendar, so the useful timing question is whether the place is finished. Galeri PETRONAS is opening in phases until the fourth quarter of 2027, and Coalfields expects full occupancy only in the first quarter of 2027. If you want the complete version, wait; if you want the free preview, go now. Six places score the full 2 points for rain shelter because their main attractions are indoors: Galeri PETRONAS, KLDEX, The Library by BookXcess, Hextar World, KLGCC Mall and Seri Negara.

Questions people ask

What are the new attractions in Kuala Lumpur in 2026?

The ones we could confirm as open on 31 October 2026 are Ombak KLCC, Galeri PETRONAS, the restored Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Seri Negara, KLDEX, The Library by BookXcess, Hextar World, KLGCC Mall, Coalfields Retail Park and Lembah Kiara Park. The ranking above scores them.

Is the Merdeka 118 observation deck open?

We could not find an operator announcement of public opening. The Wikipedia entry for the tower says that, as of 1 July 2026, most areas were still closed to the public, and it lists its mall for 1 November 2026. Check the operator’s own channels for the current position before planning around it.

Which of the new places are free?

Galeri PETRONAS is free. Entry to the grounds of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and its Royal Selangor Gallery is free, and Malaysians enter the City Gallery free. The malls and the bookstore sell no entry tickets; the attractions inside some of them, such as the skating rink or HarborLand, are priced separately.

Which new places can I reach by train?

Galeri PETRONAS, Ombak KLCC, KLDEX and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building are all within 400 m of a station. The Library by BookXcess is 681 m from a BRT station. KLGCC Mall has a paid shuttle from Semantan MRT, and Coalfields has no walkable rail link.

Do the new complexes have halal food and prayer rooms?

We do not rate restaurants, and the operators of KLDEX, Hextar World and Coalfields do not publish halal certificates on the pages we read. Check the JAKIM directory (myehalal) for the outlet you plan to use. Prayer rooms are not listed in the operator pages we read, so ask at the information desk on arrival.

Are the new places suitable for children?

KLDEX is described by The Star as designed for families, KLGCC Mall has HarborLand for toddlers to older children, and Coalfields lists HarborLand and a skating rink. Seri Negara sells youth and child tickets, from RM22 self-guided for a child under 18 as a non-Malaysian.
